Driveway Repairs and Resurfacing
Cracked or worn concrete? Ask about repair options. Get a Free Estimate
Cracks, surface wear and small damaged areas can make a driveway look tired or become inconvenient to use. Some problems can be repaired without replacing the entire driveway, but the right approach depends on the condition of the concrete and what caused the damage.
We assess concrete driveways across Christchurch and Canterbury and explain whether local repairs, resurfacing or more substantial work is appropriate. Our aim is to recommend a sensible solution rather than cover up a problem that is likely to return.

## Cracks in Concrete Driveways Concrete can crack for several reasons, including shrinkage, ground movement, loading and inadequate support. Small stable cracks may be suitable for repair, while widening or uneven cracks can indicate more significant movement. ## Surface Wear and Deterioration Surface flaking, scaling or worn patches may result from several factors, including weather exposure, concrete quality and previous treatments. We assess whether the remaining concrete is suitable for a repair product or resurfacing system. ## Settlement and Uneven Sections A sunken or raised slab may indicate movement beneath the driveway. Filling a visible crack will not correct the underlying support problem. We discuss the limits of repair when movement is present. ## Resurfacing an Existing Driveway Resurfacing can improve the appearance of suitable existing concrete, but it relies on the substrate being sound and properly prepared. Not every driveway is a good candidate.
We assess the width, location and condition of cracks before discussing repair options. Stable non-structural cracks may be treated using appropriate repair materials, depending on the surface and intended result. Repairs may remain visible, and new movement can cause cracks to return. We explain these limitations before recommending work.
Damaged edges, small broken sections and selected surface defects may be suitable for patch repairs. The surrounding concrete must be assessed to determine whether a repair is likely to hold. Colour and texture differences between new repair materials and older concrete should be expected.
Resurfacing involves preparing an existing concrete surface and applying a suitable new surface system. Its success depends on the condition, strength and stability of the original driveway. We assess whether resurfacing is appropriate and explain the likely appearance, maintenance and limitations.
Where cracking, settlement or deterioration is widespread, replacement may offer a more sensible result than repeated repairs. We consider the overall condition of the driveway rather than looking at isolated damage alone. We explain the available options so you can make an informed decision.
| Service | Estimated Cost | Average |
|---|---|---|
| Crack repair | Assessment required | Varies by extent and type |
| Localised patching | Site quote required | Varies by repair area |
| Concrete resurfacing | Site quote required | Varies by substrate and system |
| Major damage assessment | Site assessment required | Depends on condition |
Repair prices cannot be determined reliably from surface area alone. The condition of the existing concrete and the required preparation are important cost factors.

We assess the existing concrete before suggesting repair or resurfacing.
We explain potential colour differences, visible repairs and the limits of cosmetic work.
We consider whether repair offers reasonable value compared with replacement.

Resurfacing may refresh a worn appearance when the underlying slab remains suitable. It cannot reliably solve every structural crack, major settlement or ongoing water problem. A useful assessment should identify which defects can be treated and which require removing and replacing affected sections.
Hairline cracking, edge damage, spalling and localised movement have different causes. Repairs should be selected for the defect rather than using the same patching product everywhere. Ask how repaired areas will look against older concrete, especially if a uniform colour is important.
Preparation is essential for repair materials to bond and perform as intended. The surface may need cleaning, removal of loose material and attention to moisture or contamination. Confirm curing times and the conditions for reopening the driveway to traffic. Some repaired areas may remain visible even after careful finishing.
Ask what the proposed scope includes, how the surface will connect with surrounding areas, what access will be needed during the work and what aftercare is recommended. A clear written scope makes it easier to compare options and understand what is and is not included.
